Two Hives at Lapi Gelatine: A Concrete Step Toward Environmental Sustainability

A Sustainability Project at the Heart of Our Empoli Facility

Lapi Gelatine has launched a new environmental sustainability initiative by installing two beehives at its Empoli production site, now home to around 120,000 honeybees.

These bees are not just honey producers — they are natural bioindicators, offering valuable insight into the health of the local ecosystem and promoting biodiversity in the industrial context.

The project was developed in collaboration with Apicoltura Urbana Srl Società Benefit, a leading organization in urban beekeeping and ecological regeneration, and is being overseen by expert beekeeper Giuseppe “Beppe” Manno.

Why Bees Matter for Biodiversity

Bees play a vital role in sustaining our planet. As pollinators, they ensure plant reproduction and contribute significantly to food production and ecological balance.

In addition, bees are powerful environmental sentinels, reflecting changes in air, water, and land quality.

By introducing corporate beehives, we aim to support urban biodiversity, strengthen our relationship with nature, and integrate sustainable practices into our operations.

Part of Our Broader CSR and ESG Strategy

This initiative is a core element of Lapi Gelatine’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) approach — a long-standing commitment that includes:

  • Responsible sourcing and traceability

  • Animal welfare and sustainable supply chains

  • Reduction of environmental impact

  • Community engagement and education

Beyond producing 100% local honey, our goal is to raise awareness among employees, partners, and the broader community about the importance of preserving biodiversity.

What’s Next: Activities and Community Engagement

In the coming months, the project will expand through:

    • Guided tours of the hives

    • Educational and outreach activities

    • Events for employees, schools, and local stakeholders

    • The first harvest of our artisan Lapi Honey

All initiatives aim to connect people, industry, and nature, and to inspire a more sustainable future — starting with a small but powerful symbol: the bee.

Lapi Gelatine’s Commitment to a Greener Future

At Lapi Gelatine, we believe that every company can be a driver of positive change. By integrating beekeeping into our facility, we take a meaningful step toward an industrial model that is more respectful of the environment.

We are proud to contribute to local biodiversity and to act — one bee at a time — in support of a healthier, more sustainable future.
